2017 Marks 20th Anniversary for Westchase District’s Premier Athletic Event

Friday, March 31 marks the date for Westchase District’s 20th anniversary “field day for adults.” The event was conceived in 1997 as a way to bring Westchase District businesses together for a day of fun, networking and corporate team-building. Over the years, it has grown into a highly-competitive event that sells out every year, while generating thousands of dollars annually for area charities.

“It’s a thrill to see how this event has grown over the years,” said Dave Gilkeson, Westchase District’s chief operating officer, who organized the event in its early years. “In our first year, the event featured a handful of teams, we presented the awards at the end of the day and raised just over a thousand dollars for charity. More recently, the event sells out at 60 teams. We present the awards at a hosted award lunch and typically raise between $12,000 and $18,000 for charity.”

No Serious Athletics, Just Serious Fun

Teams consist of four-to-six persons (co-ed) and compete in five different athletic events. This year’s event will feature the Soccer Kick, NBA 2-ball, Dodgeball, Briefcase Relay and a game to be named later. “We’re looking to add a new and different competition this year,” said Sherry Fox, Westchase District’s VP of communications. “We’re still considering several options to challenge and test our competitors.”

Summer Camp and Charitable Support

“Our team fees are only $300,” noted Fox. “We keep our fees low so that any Westchase  District business of any size can participate. Some companies enter multiple teams. They may enjoy some friendly, internal competition or host teams from different divisions within the company to participate in a day of team-building.”

Major Sponsorships are available for $850. These sponsors enjoy a higher level of recognition at the event. “We’re especially grateful to the major sponsors and our Title Sponsor Amegy Bank, because those sponsorship dollars allow us to make a generous contribution to charity at the end of the day,” added Fox.

Since 1998, the Westchase District’s Corporate Challenge has raised almost $230,000 for area charities, including Quillian Center’s summer day camps.  The money is distributed by Westchase District Community Fund.
