WESTCHASE DISTRICT'S ANNUAL HOLIDAY IN MAY FOOD DRIVE
A huge round of applause to all who participated in Holiday
in May 2010
The Westchase District’s annual Holiday in May
food drive resulted in generous contributions to the food pantry
at West Houston Assistance Ministries (WHAM).
More than 2,300 pounds of food were collected, plus an additional $268 in cash donations. For every $1.00 WHAM
collects, they can purchase $5.00 worth of food for those in need.
Once again, we had another "newcomer" that participated in Holiday
in May along with the businesses that participate every year.
CB & I collected 239 pounds of food. As a bonus for Memorial
Day Friday, CB&I employees who donated $5.00 were allowed to wear jeans that day.
Granite Properties, a long time participant collected 235
pounds at their Granite Westchase II building. Thanks to all of
you who participated and those who provided much needed items to
WHAM.
Each summer, donated food items are collected at drop centers
throughout Westchase District to re-stock the food pantry at WHAM for the summer months. Building
managers and apartment managers place Holiday in May collection
boxes in their building lobbies and promote this event to their
tenants and residents.
“Every year it is amazing to see all of
the businesses and organizations come together to help others and
this year was no exception," says Karen Wallis, coordinator of the
event. “Even during a time when we are concerned about the economy,
the Westchase Dsitrict community still worked together to ensure that children right here in our community are well-fed
during the summer months."
WHAM continues to accept donations
throughout the year. The following items are among those that are
always needed at the WHAM pantry: flour (small, family-size), sugar
(small, family-size), cooking oil (32 oz), spaghetti sauce,
spaghetti, soup, peanut butter, canned pastas, canned fruit, canned
vegetables, cereal, and jelly.
Personal care items are also collected and
distributed through the WHAM pantry. Needed items include: shampoo,
soap, toilet paper, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, shaving
cream, razors, hand lotion, and diapers.
